It's the most common problem we come across at the business school - but what can you do to find more time in your business? This post gives some of our top tips on time management and effectively using the number of hours you have available.
Our society seems relentless in its demand for our time. Just last night, we were watching Dara O'Briain (who was fabulous!) talking about how his time management had to alter when he had children. The Sopranos has given way to Pepper Pig and he no longer listens to new music. He hasn't given up on his video games though and that sketch is worth buying the DVD for on its own!
Anyway, I digress. What can you do in your business to maximise your time? Here are some of our top tips to assist you...
- Maximise your time - for example, when I was 13, I had a paper-round and instead of delivering one paper, I delivered three and earned three-times the income.
- Do similar tasks together - if you have to make ten calls, make them one after the other. Chopping and changing tasks takes time.
- Minimise distractions - your emails pinging every time they come in will distract you and interrupt you from the task you were working on. Just check your email 2-3 times per day.
- Concentrate on money-making activities (if that's the goal of your business). Could you delegate, or eliminate other tasks?
- Maintain a sense of priority - nobody dies if I don't call them back until tomorrow, despite the pressure I might put on myself. Whereas my sister's a paramedic - she has to return the call and I thank my lucky stars every day I chose the career path I did!
- Take regular breaks. Sitting at your desk for eight hours straight isn't the most productive thing you can do, so get up and walk around every now and again. Taking breaks and days off actually makes you more productive.
- Drink plenty of water - it keeps your concentration levels high (and will force you to take regular breaks!). It will also mean you probably need less sleep (as most of us don't drink enough).
If you have any more tips to share, please send them through and we'll add them to the blog.
Enjoy the bank holiday weekend!
