Thomas has enjoyed fame recently through the popular TV series, The Lakes, with Rory McGrath. He manages the Langdale Chase with his partner Clare and has quite an interesting life story.
Unable to walk until he was 6; Thomas was told he wouldn't play sports. But that didn't stop him playing rugby worldwide in his youth. Despite being unable to swim two years ago, he has since swum two lengths of Windermere, plus the English Channel; winning him the award for the most outstanding swimmer of 2009.
As a result; he's never let anyone tell him he can't do anything. And he applies the same rules to business. His advice was to choose fun and do something you enjoy. He chose the Savoy Hotel, instead of the police or the armed forces, because he enjoyed it. He became the youngest Manager at the Savoy Hotel and learnt a huge amount from his European counterparts.
He then moved to Bermuda and learnt all about hospitality from the Americans and Carribeans. Spotting another learning opportunity, he moved on again, this time to Dubai working for Hyatt. Here he learnt about Eastern cultures and how hospitality differs in another corner of the world.
Thomas then returned to the UK, bringing all that knowledge with him. He became Managing Director of the Langdale Chase, where he has remained for a number of years. And he keeps those years of learning close to his heart; having respect for everyone. The washer-upper in the kitchen is known as the Managing Director of Washing Up and all the staff have similar titles; Directors of their own sections. As a result, the Langdale Chase enjoys an average staff retention of six-years, in contrast to the usual 1 year in the hospitality industry.
If you have the chance to listen to Thomas speak, he shares his amazing life story. But his lessons in business are equally inspiring and have proven to be a great success for both him and the hotel.
